Learn how to qualify for a scholarship to receive the training you need to work for one of our members.

Will I Qualify?

There are a few steps in the qualification process: eligibility determination, education planning, pre-screening interviews, and employer interviews. In some situations, special information sessions may be offered to discuss the scholarship process, review the job description(s), and highlight local training programs.

Step 1- Eligibility Determination

Scholarships are funded by No Worker Left Behind, Workforce Investment Act, and other funding sources that may require eligibility determination based on income, employment status, or other criteria.

Most positions within the healthcare industry require that applicants present a clean background check. Felony and many misdemeanor convictions may make you ineligible for employment with a healthcare provider.

Step 2- Education Planning

An academic assessment is necessary to ensure that scholarship applicants are within the range necessary to succeed in the training program and eventually on the job. Don’t worry, this is not a pass or fail test. It simply lets us know where you are and how much work, if any, needs to be done to prepare you for training.

Scholarship applicants will meet with an academic advisor who will walk them through the course requirements and class schedules. This will help us understand when the scholarship applicant will complete their certification and be ready for employment in their new career.

Some training programs have selective admittance procedures; scholarship applicants may be required to show proof of acceptance into the program for you wish to receive the scholarship.

Step 3- Pre-Selection Process

Scholarship applicants will be invited to participate in resume and interviewing workshops and later a pre-screen interview. Participation in and results from these activities will be reviewed along with your education plan and eligibility determination results. These factors will be matched with the participating employer(s) requirements and referrals will be made to the final interview with the employer.

Step 4- Employer Interview

The final step in the scholarship award selection process is an interview with the employer. This should be treated as an actual employment interview. This employer will be making the final decision on who they would like to see receive the scholarship award.

If I am selected, what happens next?

If you are awarded a scholarship, you will work with a Capital Area Michigan Works! employment specialist to get started with school registration. Many of the employers may require or have part-time employment or volunteer opportunities while you are completing training.

What if I am not selected?

Should you not be selected for a scholarship by the employer, it is not the end of your journey. There is a network of resources available through Capital Area Michigan Works! to assist you in achieving your career goals; and many new opportunities become available each day. You may be referred to opportunities with other employers or find that you are still eligible to receive funds for your training program.

VOCATIONAL TRAINING

Career Quest

Medical Assistant Program
Medical Assistants are valued members of the medical team and are increasingly relied upon to perform both administrative and clinical procedures, communicate and assist doctors, nurses, patients, medical billing staff, insurance representatives and pharmacists.

Medical Administrative Assistant Program
Medical Administrative Assistants are a vital part of the medical office setting, responsible for running a medical office, maintaining medical records, and scheduling multiple patients, and understanding patient needs. Most medical office managers begin their careers as medical administrative assistants.

Medical Specialist Program
Medical Specialists are the front line of the medical team and are relied upon to perform "front office" tasks such as patient scheduling, billing, coding, reception, office accounting, and filing.

Certified Nurse Aide
A CNA is the eyes and ears of the nurse. They perform tasks such as taking vital signs, moving residents/patients, assisting with some medical procedures, as well as monitoring residents/patients conditions.

DRM International Learning Center

Certified Home Health Aide

This course covers the role of the home health aide and the responsibilities and ethical standards required of a home health aide. Instruction will be given on nutritional guidelines, infection control, homemaking services, bathing, feeding and toileting, and taking and recording vital signs and measurements. The Advanced course will also include 51 hours of hands-on, in the field clinical training. CPR/First Aid are also included with this program. Upon completion of the Advanced course, students will be eligible to sit for the national certification administered by the Michigan Home Health Association.

Certified Nurse Aide (CNA)

Students who successfully complete this course will receive a certificate of completion and qualify to take the exam to become a Certified Nurse Aide registered in the State of Michigan. The course provides 79 hours of training, including classroom instruction, laboratory work, and clinical experience. Our students consistently exceed the State exam passing standard.

What sets apart the DRM International Learning Center CNA training program is that our graduates are afforded training above the minimum required by the state. In addition to more lecture and lab hours, tuition to our program also covers training in the following areas:

  • 1. Health Care CPR/First Aid
  • 2. TB testing
  • 3. Blood Borne Pathogens
  • 4. Employability Skills

CNAplusTM

DRM ILC also offers a training program not offered in any other school in the entire State. The CNAplusTM program is authorized by the State of Michigan to afford five additional certifications above the CNA certificate. Research on the specific areas of concentration covered in the CNAplusTM program indicates that facilities throughout mid-Michigan are more likely to hire job candidates who possess these additional certifications. Survey respondents stated they would be more inclined to hire and retain CNAs who were able to distribute medications in the absence of qualified nursing staff. Rehabilitation units were eager to be able to staff their wards with qualified CNAs who could assist with restorative care patients. Memory care units expressed interest in the work DRM ILC does with Alzheimer's/Dementia care students and how we prepare them for memory care work. Hospice facilities are also prepared to receive palliative graduates. Program attendees will also be eligible to sit for a national Advanced Home Health Aide certification administered by the Michigan Home Health Association.

Certified Job Candidate Program

We offer our graduates specialized training in employment acquisition that includes placement assistance, resume training, and other skills not often addressed in other training programs. Students learn internal and external interview preparation along with creative ways to become the top candidate for every job. This class is open to the community at a very modest rate.
